Zeppole

There are a few delicacies that appear during the northern Spring to lighten the load of Lenten fasting. The English Simnel Cake is one that has featured here; recently I discovered an Italian speciality related to the Feast of St Joseph (March 19), which although set to the solar calendar always falls in Lent.

New Haven, Connecticut isn't exactly Naples but it's a town with serious Italian heritage and food. It also claims some serious and distinctive pizza that's less seasonally-limited.

In March however the bakeries start to put out signs for, and plates of, a different sort of doughy specialty.

These are zeppole (singular zeppola) which are a sort of doughnut, generically speaking; fried balls of dough, molded similarly to the northern European kruller, cooked then garnished with custard or a ricotta mixture similar to that used for cannoli.
